John C. Maxwell is one of my favourite authors of all time. I find his books insightful and they have impacted my thinking and perspectives on leadership greatly. I also throughly enjoy the way he delivers the wisdom using stories, examples and quotes from a variety of sources around the world and throughout history.
360 Degree Leader – Developing Your Influence From Anywhere in the Organization has had a very fundamental impact on me and it is easily in the top 3 of the most impactful books that I have read. It drills down to the meat of the matter discussing the ins and outs of the role of middle management in any organization. In the book, John states that those in middle management actually have a much longer things to do list than that of the top leaders. They are also the people who are most informed, as they are they are directly connected to those at the top, middle and bottom of the organization, unlike the top leaders who are not directly connected to those at the bottom of the organization.
A 360 degree Leader can
- Connect & Lead up to the top leaders (your boss and his peers)
- Connect & Lead across to those on their level (your peers)
- Connect & Lead down to the people that they manage. (your subordinates & your peers subordinates)
This book gave me a tremendous sense of worth as I currently find myself in the role of a middle manager in a few different organizations. Leading from the middle of the organization is not easy. Fustration is easy to find when you are caught in the "middle"! 360 degree leader is an excellent guide to reducing this fustrution and making a difference without having to wait until you become the CEO or Top Leader.
I strongly recommend the book for everyone, top leaders included. It will open your eyes to new perspective and quite possibly turn your organization around.
An interesting point is that even if you still decide to wait till you become the top leader. When the day does finally come and you take the #1 spot, you might just roll over a couple days afterward and realise that even the top leader still has people to answer to, and its in that moment that you would be wishing to be a seasoned 360 degree leader.
360 degree leaders are vital and they work wherever they are plugged inside and organization, so get started now!!!!
