I have written a good deal about Tourism here on my blog. Agrotourism, I learned recently is "a direct expansion of ecotourism, which encourages visitors to experience agricultural life at first hand." (defn taken from ECOTOUR).
This concept was made all the clearer to me after watching some very informative videos on the Caribbean AgroTourism website (www.caribbeanagrotourism.com) managed by Inter-American Institute For Cooperation On Agriculture . It showcased a few different examples of how farmers around the Caribbean have used their farms to provide accommodation, restuarant and attractions for tourists. It sounds simple but imagine being able to have a retreat on a farm where you can get away from it all and freely roam the property picking fruits and enjoying the lush green surroundings.
As you might or might not know, I am all for environment and protecting it. I am excited at the idea of us taking good care of our environment and then inviting other people from around the world to share in the experience. Now from a marketing perspective, we are consistently hearing that tourists are travelling today for many different reasons beyond just the sun,sea and sand. Agrotourism, seems like a sensible way for us to evolve our Tourism product and benefit far beyond foreign exchange. In the process we will also be enhancing our environment and supporting some of the cultural development of our islands.
Now for those of you in Barbados, the event in the flyer might catch your attention. Its a Folk Fair to showcase AgroTourism in Barbados. There are going to be some interesting things that. I understand some of Barbados' best chefs and farmers will be serving up some great dishes! I am there!
Come out and enjoy some of the D'Sweet Life.
