The Blackberry Storm 3 / Talladega Slider Or Just Plain Slider!

Its amazing,

Its truly amazing to see how the Blackberry smartphone has been able to reach such a high level of adoption. I remember just about 5 years ago when I had just bought my first Blackberry, not many people in the Caribbean knew what it was. I found myself like a Blackberry Road Show doing mini presentations almost everyday show people what the blackberry could do. To those who already knew about Blackberry, it was my "claim to fame". I was the guy with the Blackberry. I didn't realize how serious it was, until or as one person described – it was the ultimate status symbol.

Those where not the reasons for my purchase but they were some benefits that I welcomed with open arms. My main motivation for getting it was to have access to my personal email accounts while on the go. My work situation and lack of access to my personal email accounts was killing many a business opportunity for me.

Today though, Blackberry has been able to reach an 80 % or more penetration in the Caribbean … at least according to RIM VP of Sales Peter Gould in an interview he did with me a little while ago. Now with all the specials the mobile providers in the Caribbean have given us on Blackberries since that interview Blackberries penetration might be reaching up to 90%!!!!

Today, having a Blackberry in many industries is expected.  Not having one is just not understood. Its unthinkable. The Blackberry messenger in particular has literally become the window to the world while you are travelling or on the go. How life can change!

What Is Next For Blackberry?

As an avid user, I would personally love to have a Blackberry which has touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard. In the conclusion of my review of the Blackberry Storm – I said it was missing the "beloved Keyboard". Since then I have found myself wishing for a keyboard option from time to time. I miss the convenience of being able to type while looking away from the device.

I posted a blog post about such a Blackberry being available in 2010… A "Blackberry Slider" to be exact. Since then its been generating some serious interest on this blog. It seems now to be dubbed the Talladega / Storm 3 / Slider. Judging from the response it seems like there are many of you ready to own one right now.

I am curious though what would you want in that phone?

Personally I would like

  • to install unlimited apps or almost unlimited apps. (this could actually really help me in my Social Media Management)
  • a better browsing experience
  • support for video conferencing via skype
  • A better camera – i will be forever asking for this the photographer in me
  • Strong Video support to stream almost anything on the internet
  • More battery life

I think this would make it a very good fit for individuals as well as business people alike.

Let me just tease you .. here is the CEO of  RIM (Blackberry) Presenting a Keynote at the World Mobile Congress a NEW BROWSER IS COMING!!!

What do you want in your next Blackberry? Or What would make you switch to Blackberry?

Digicel Barbados Launches First Mega Store & Blackberry Centre

Digicel General Manager Barry O'Brien

I like to be treated good as I am sure most of you like to be. A few drinks, hor d'ouvres and some blackberry cake is a good start for me.

A couple weeks ago I attended the launch of the first ever Mega Store and Blackberry Centre in the Caribbean at the Digicel Barbados, Broad Street Branch.  I was greeted at the door by the Digicel Girls who I must say were well presented and looking good. No, No it was not only me that commented about them other people said the same thing. It set a good tone for the evening.

I after I slipped my business card into the pool for the blackberry draw and entered the event.  I started my mingling and networking catching up with a few people and in a few minutes the speeches began with the new Marketing Manager Janelle Hunte acting as the Chairperson for the evening. After a few speeches the ribbon was cut and we entered the new mega store where they gave away a few blackberry compliments RIM-Blackberry. Corey Graham 2.0 name was not pulled oh no I am not bitter at all. I was not really hoping to win another blackberry.

Actually I was looking to see if I could get the Blackberry Experts in the booth and asking them a few questions so that i could grasp what the Blackberry center is all about.
Yeah that's my story and I am sticking with it. If you sensed me being a bit sharp that the reason why.

Lol really though  There were 2 Digicel Experts on hand who did seem to know their stuff when I got to talking with them. They were not behind the booth but they were approachable.

Getting serious again,
I have to commend Digicel for launching this initiative which is really, really needed here. I was reminded of how much it was needed just a few deays ago when I got a call that went something like this

Sexy voice come on the line

"Hey Corey. How are you going?"

"I am pretty how are you doing?

"Well my husband has a problem with his blackberry and I know you are a Blackberry Freak can you help me …."

LOL….
Please, Please let it be known that I am always glad to help, I enjoy the gift of being able to do my good deed each day, but … anyways I will deal with that later.

I am just trying to establish there is great need for Blackberry owners to be able to take their Blackberry woes to someone who is readily available.
As a technie, 2 of the most important features when I am deciding on an important and hard working little black electornic device are

  • warranty
  • support.

You must be able to get some assistance when things go wrong. And if you know electronics you know what I am talking about. From that background, any initiative for enhancing customer support gets my vote. Again I commend Digicel on this initiative which they said they turned around in 3 months time and RIM-Blackberry came on board. Be proud of yourselves.

Now in terms of the mega store. Let me say that Blackberry cake was really, really good. Now the mega store hmm, well I didn't really grasp the reason why it was now being called a mega store? But with Christmas such a just short time away, let's give Digicel some space to see what they have in store for us for Christmas time this year. I mean with CEO talking about Digicel building a wimax network, providing PBX services and working on providing landline services, only time will tell what this Mega Store thing truly is.

You can take a listen to Digicel's General Manager Barry O'Brien speech which tells the story of First ever Digicel Mega Store and Blackberry Store.

Social Media For Business In The Caribbean

A good friend just asked me for some tips on Social Media For Business In the Caribbean. I was about to respond, when I thought about you and I figured I should also share my thoughts with you at the same time.

Here goes,

What exactly Is Social Media?

There is alot in the news these days about social media and many of us feel intimidated it. Let me put you a little at ease. Social Media is just that – a media that is social. Technology has taken our person to person interactions to another level, by facilitating much more open communication and conversation. We are now able to build on relationships we never would have imagined 10 years ago being able to have. Social Media today, enables just about anyone communicate with anyone who wants to listen and from anywhere in the world in an instant. Tweets, status updates in facebook, notes blogs and more can we shared with millions of people worldwide in an instant.
The world changed whenever there was advancements in communication … ship lines, telegraph, air travel, internet and now we are in the age of social media. Social Media is changing the world by driving conversation and interaction in a way that has never possible. Those who never had a voice, can now speak and be "heard" by a friend living 5 mins away and a friend living in another island, at the same time. Social Media is empowering groups of people who share a common passion to come togethers in a way they they never have before.

What does Social Media Look Like In The Caribbean?

Well one thing is sure, anywhere you go in the Caribbean, the speed at which gossip travels is a kin to Usian Bolt running the 100 m. In our close knit Caribbean societies its easy for juicy gossip to travel the length and breath of the different islandsat break neck paste. Let me help you with this perspective,

You are walking down the road tomorrow and someone comes up to you "I heard that you just celebrated your birthday"

Ah ya with me now? lol.

Alrite now enter Social Media into the mix and look at how this scenario changes….gossip travels faster than 9.58 secs I would advise you keep your closet clean I say. lol.

Seriously in the social media world which enables more communication, conversation and interaction. Hot gossip spreads fast! No longer would you have to wait for an email or a call to be kept up to date because we all have aquired the the power to publish thanks to Social Media. We can publish via a simple twitter or facebook update or in a longer format on a blog, there can be pictures, video, live broadcasts all for free and from anyone. We are all now publishers no longers having to wait for the editor of a local newspaper or the program manager at a local radio or TV station to make a decision on what makes the news and what doesn’t.  The news can travel so much more quickly now.
Also because we can all be publishers, you can get your "gossip" directly from the horse’s mouth yourself, by visiting their profile or blog.

Social Media is developing differently in the Caribbean than in the large cities of the developed world. Our size, the absence of technology companies and challenges with setting up e-commerce sites we tend less crucial day to day information published online consistently and that changes the dynamic slightly.

The people who are really embracing the social media in the Caribbean are those who do not have a voice or groups who  don’t quite have a well established network as yet. You will find that those people who are not in the mainstream are toying around with the social media to build their audience or  to build communities of like minded people.

I am in the entertainment industry so I can give you a very clear example of this. Many of the established main stream Caribbean artistes do not have a regularly updated online presence, meanwhile you will find some of the "underground"/ "up and coming" artistes around the region with some of the best online footprints out there. They have great websites, myspace pages or facebook fan page and more importantly it is very up to date with the latest and greatest news.

Everyone is a publisher now, remember that.

Social Media For Business In The Caribbean

It has been my experience that most business in the Caribbean do a very poor job at implementing Social Media / web 2.0 into their day to day existance. It is truly amazing the kind of cash they might spend on a newspaper ad or any other form of advertising for example.
Why make thousands of people who you and I know don’t care about your business or your product listen to another ad from you. Social Media has given you the gift of communicating directly with your customers. You can build a strong relationsho with them by having more conversation and interaction with them. Also taking time to listen to their concerns and being able to fix them.

What’s that rule again? Its easier to keep a customer that going out and finding new ones? And that other one? … Word Of Mouth marketing in the best marketing?

And we established that social media enables more conversation right? hmmm?

What are people talking about? Are they talking about you? What are they saying? Are they sharing bad experiences? Good experiences?
Do you think there is a way that you can spend those advertising dollars that might make 20 true fans talk about you even more? Do you think that 20 passionate people raving about you can enlist another 20 fans?

Maybe you need to read the marketing lesson I learnt from the Brewsters Road Crew last year check it out here - http://coreykgraham.me/bizblog/brewsters-road-taught-me-a-marketing-lesson/

I am wondering if are hearing me … about the power of social media, word of mouth marketing, everyone being a publisher?
Re-Read the first paragraph of this post!

See, look at that I am sharing this with the world! I have never been published in the newspaper, but I am able to have a voice now and I am able to talk to you. You can talk back to me by commenting on this article. Social Media at its best.

They are 3 companies I that I have talked about or I am about to mention in this blog

- Rex Wireless look what they got out of me - http://coreykgraham.me/bizblog/cg-20-previews-alertmatrix-from-rex-wireless-blackberry-software/

- RIM (BlackBerry) - http://coreykgraham.me/bizblog/cg-20-review-of-the-blackberry-storm/

- Shape Services – Look out this deal is still hot off the press

and more to come

I don’t mean to gossip but they are all international companies. Most of the regional companies… corporations, I have encountered don’t know how to deal with some boy with a 2.0 at the end of his name, asking about getting information or a test drive of the new Rolls-Royce .. with chaffuer in the showroom.

Well to you business people there are several disenchanted writers, and bloggers out there willing to work with you to promote your company for just a few freebies, etc.

The question is though are you ready to work smart?
