Professional Responsibility & Legacy

Many of the industries in our beloved Caribbean are under developed and lacking structure, after all,  we are a developing community. Many of us though, still manage develop and grow ourselves as professionals in the various disciplines we choose to be a part of. It that expertise we use to earn a living and eventually fulfill our dreams and passions. This post is directed and such people.

You have invested much time, energy and money into building yourself into the person you are today. You might be a bit of an unsung hero but no one can deny that you have attained a certain level of skill and talent in your area of endeavour. Take some time and be proud of that.

I want to encourage you to share what you have learnt with the world. Nah, not quite setting up workshops necessarily. I want you to give yourself the permission to do something to celebrate your talents and gifts. Put together some kind of showcase which you can really pour all your expertize, experience and skill into. We all have some dream project we would love to execute …. but we wait. Well stop waiting, its that simple.

I believe that it is important that you share the things you have learnt through these projects and help to move your industry forward. These dream projects stretch the minds of those currently in the industry  and make more dreamers and less complainers . They can intrigute the younger bright minds in the Caribbean Community. You feel great about being able to give the gift of inspiration to your son, daughter, neice or nephew etc. You have the power to give imagination, inspiration and freedom to the coming generation.

Those young minds are watching your every move, it is your choice in what you do with that attention.

On that note I would like to congratulate iNDRANi who has embarked upon a journey of showcasing her talent to the Caribbean Community and the world. She has had to get creative and build her own stage so that she can share her expertise and talents with others.
Now for those of you who don’t know, iNDRANi is a very widely known for her work as a vocal coach and background vocalist having worked with some of the top artistes of the Caribbean. Congrats iNDRANi.

I should also make mention of Phil Phillips who is the first and only man so far to win Entrepenuer of the
Year for Entertainment as he also takes the stage to share his knowledge and vision for the Caribbean Music Industry Friday at 12:30 pm in the George Street  Auditorium.

Let me leave you with probably the most riveting example I could find on sharing your expertise. It is the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. It is actually now a very famous story with over 10 million hits on youtube.
The basic story is that doctors gave Randy Pausch just a few months to live and he decided to give his final lecture ever.
In an interview with Time Magazine he identified with what one of his fans had said. He decided to give that last lecture because he was a professor and that is what he knew what to do – lecture

In the lecture he also speaks of leaving his professional legacy to the world.
