One of the big misconceptions of my exploits as a blogger is that my interest is self-serving. I understand that the URL is my name and yes, "the dude actually has a logo" lol, talking about this always makes me smile. It does because if you spend any time around me you would know that I am very pro-Caribbean in my outlook and I am always willing to share my knowledge to help out a situation.

Now for me, CoreyKGraham.Me is my "portal to the world". I see it as a domain where I can share my thoughts, ideas and experiences with the world. It is my hope that these posts will move the world forward, however small. My greatest pleasure actually comes when one of my blog posts helps people who I would not normally touch make more informed decisions, whether it is with their marketing strategy or their next smartphone purchase. My drive is to help others and to do my part to enhance this world.

Having said all of that I want to invite you to become a member of my site and subscribe to my newsletter so that I can continue to share with you. To be quite honest my decision to do this membership / subscribe to my newsletter drive is to set up the platform to offer freebies and discounts to you as the opportunity arises. I'll so no more you decide if its of value to you.

Alrite so get involved,

SciTech Expo Barbados 2010 Gets Going This Week

Science took over much of my younger years. When my peers were caught up reading novels, I was into the science books exploring and reading about great inventors especially the "light bulb man" Thomas Edison. He is one inventor I really respect. I also was into creating things. I always had some new project I was working on putting together or experimenting with when I should have been doing homework or studying to get an A instead of a B.

There were some good times, I remember borrowing my mother's face mirror to make a solar cooker and staying up till 4:30 am writing code for my computer game among many, many other  things. Not all of my experiments went right of course … like the time I got a new science kit. I was all excited intoxicated but all the new ideas and possibilities filling my head. Immediately I started to experiment. I remember the last thing I tried on that first day of receiving the kit was removing my night light from the socket and putting wires into the wall socket…. Before I continue let me just make it clear that my night light was only used because of security concerns from my parents.

Now, about that final experiment of Day 1 of receiving the science kit. Actually I made an equation which captures what I learnt brilliantly. It taught me -

wires + wall socket + small fire + burned wall socket = unhappy parents + l,

where l  = licks to impart a lesson imparted by my loving parents – don't get caught experimenting

My experimenting today, is most publicly apparent on this blog. Those of you who are longstanding readers of my blog would know that it is a constant evolution, there is always something new. I would say though, that in the Caribbean we don't always get to be on the creative side of technology as most of our technology is imported and maintained. Personally, I believe in creativity and innovation and I believe that we have alot of potential in this area. As a result, I am happy to be involved with the online promotion of the SciTech Expo In Barbados through Drenalin Productions.

Today, I want to remove the official hat and talk to you outside of professional allegiances, because too often we limit creativity to music, dance and visual arts. If you believe that creativity and a spirit of innovation should exist in our Caribbean Community, make some time to become involved in the SciTech Expo if even as a guest interacting with primary, secondary and tertiary students, professionals and other like minded persons.

You can

  • put it in your status
  • tweet about it
  • mention it to interested persons

See you later this week! Come and see exhibits in the area of agriculture, computer science, engineering, environment, medicine, health and technology

Explore And Make Light Work Of Your Day

We are bombarded these days by several web apps claiming to "help" us do this and that easier and faster. Its hard to keep up with all the new stuff that is out there and still get your work done. I know how it is new services seems to be developed as fast as we receive emails. Talking about emails that is not getting any easier. We have more emails finding their way into our inboxes. And now you have more inboxes to manage with facebook and all the jazz.

Its almost like a natual instinct to militantly protect your sanity and stress levels. You refrain from rushing and trying every new thing people suggest to you. At times I know you can get pretty aggressive about and it can get pretty ugly pretty quickly.

"I said it don't what it. Why are you still trying to get me to sign up. I have to finish my work. I will talk to you later"

I want to urge you today to set some time aside and explore the world. Shop around. Test drive some of these new web apps. Expose yourself to what is out there. You don't really want to be working hard. Well not when you can be working smarter and getting more done.

At the end of the day technology here to make your lifes easier. We eat with forks, knifes, spoons etc. All technology that make eating easier for us. There are people out there experiencing the same problems you are and they are helping develop technologies that will know those problems go away or easier to bare.

Open you mind and dedicate a little time in your busy schedule to find out what is out there.

I would really hate to think that you and your team might be agonizing about a particular task that can so much easy with simple tools like google documents and other collaborative tools.

Just how much of your precious time are you wasting?

Caribbean Music Industry Networking Organization (CaMINO) Just Formed

Photography By Corey Graham 2.0

You know me, I am Pro-Caribbean and I am for any initiative and movement that brings Caribbean People closer together and its even better when they aim to develop the creativity and culture of the Caribbean community. It is with great pleasure that I share this press release on the newly formed Caribbean Music Industry Networking Organization with you.

Press Release From The Caribbean Music Industry Networking Organization (CaMINO)

The Caribbean Music Industry Networking Organization (CaMINO) saw its genesis on Wednesday, September 23 at the recently concluded CARIFORUM-EU EPA Workshop in Martinique; the Organanization will seek to serve  the interests of its members and by extension the wider community of stakeholders to which its members belong – the Caribbean Music Industry.

The regional trade agency, Caribbean Export Development Agency (CEDA) has placed its full support behind the Network which is still in its formative stages and has committed to work with the group to facilitate the vision to drive the ownership and export potential of Caribbean music globally.  "The vision we have for regional integration and collaboration is in fact the reality that we are already living," stated Tonika Sealy, CEDA Senior Services Advisor.Representatives from 10 Caribbean islands met in round table sessions to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the music industry in each territory.  The results were documented in a skeleton paper likely to form the basis of a strategic plan to develop and promote music export within the region and across the world.  Nations represented included: Antigua, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Grenada, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  The French Territories (Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guyana) and Trinidad will also be represented as discussions continue.

The group, like the region is divided by water, but united by culture and will employ today's most advanced technology to facilitate communication and convene virtual meetings.  Even as the group takes the necessary steps to solidify its foundation, CaMINO is working with recognised academics, practitioners, buyers and a wide range of industry players to identify shared issues to table on the agenda.  Preliminary discussions  touched on the issues of royalty collections, intellectual property, training and education of industry practitioners within the region and lobbying heads of CARICOM/CARIFORUM to support music industry initiatives.  Initial informal meetings were held with Dr. Keith Nurse and other academics to discuss information sharing and requisite expertise for joint projects across the Caribbean as well as mutual development.

With the issue of royalty collections being so high on the agenda, initial discussions were held with the Caribbean Copyright Link (CCL) about executing royalty collection particularly in the EU.

The interim members that participated in the discussions were: Phil Phillips (Co-Chairman), Howard McIntosh (Co-Chairman), Carlette DeLeon (Communications Officer), J. Omari Harrigan (Antigua), Lyndia Rose (Jamaica), Rychard Skeete (Barbados), Angenella Young (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), George Thomas (Barbados), Livingston Nelson (Grenada), Pascale Jaunay (Haiti), Modou Diagne (Barbados), McCarthy Marie (Dominica), Steve Etienne (st. Lucia), Ivan Duran (Belize), John Francis (St. Kitts and Nevis) and Denis Ward (Guyana).  Interested parties can join the movement by making contact with Caribbean Export.

In keeping with its mandate to be representative of the entire Caribbean region, the first outreach programme will see interim co-chairs Phil Phillips and Howard McIntosh meeting with key stakeholders in October.

Once the formation of the organization is completed, it will be truly regional and inclusive.  Caribbean music has a rich and distinguished history, as a result, CaMINO will ensure that the voices of past are represented along with those of the present and future.

The interim Board and members of CaMINO will simultaneously seek to formalize the organization while reaching out to key stakeholders, completing the strategic plan and coordinating a delegation of member countries for WOMEX.

The Wonders Of MindMapping

For most of my life I have not quite understood or accepted my creative talents. Its only in the last few years that  I have been able to understand and accept them. I am now able to appreciate my core strength of making connections between various seemly unrelated events or ideas. This is a strength that I have been working hard to develop.

Mindmapping is one activity that has helped me tremendously in this area. Its been the main tool I used in planning my strategy and gaining clarity in developing this blog and several other projects I have been involved with.
However, I lost touch with mind mapping over the last few months and I have been using very rarely. Alrite I'll admit it. I thought I had things covered and I didn't think I needed to be mind mapping that often.
My opinion is very different now that I have rediscovered it in the past few weeks. I have a greater appreciation for it and plan to make it a part of my core. It makes idea organization and generation much more effortless!

What is a Mind Map?
(taken from Wikipedia)
A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

Why Does MindMapping work?

Mind mapping is the only thing I have found that allows me to truly explore my ideas. It could be for anything from problem solving to planning to project management or task management. It is the ability to see the relationships between a set of ideas, resources and intentions and re-arrange them until they fit together like a jigsaw puzzle.
The real power in this process is that there is no particular why that these elements are supposed to come together to form the final picture and you can add in new ideas at any time. There are limitless possibilities to the connections you make to accomplish your goal.

Here is what wikipedia has to say:
By presenting ideas in a radial, graphical, non-linear manner, mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning and organizational tasks. Though the branches of a mindmap represent hierarchical tree structures, their radial arrangement disrupts the prioritizing of concepts typically associated with hierarchies presented with more linear visual cues. This orientation towards brainstorming encourages users to enumerate and connect concepts without a tendency to begin within a particular conceptual framework.

Yeah it goes deeper than meets the eye,

George Johnson who has used Mindmap for over 25 years says -
They work because the brain operates in circles. A simple way to think about this is to think of millions of bits of information in the brain flowing in circles. When two bits of information intersect an idea is formed. Mind maps facilitate the collection of those bits of information, where as creating linear lists forces the brain to work in a way that is not natural for it and consequently you don't get all of the information available to you. Another way of saying this is that lists are very left brain and mind map thinking is very right brain and left brain.

Talk about developing are greater appreciation! After reading these articles and looking over a few mindmaps I can safely say that definitely have a much more healthy appreciation for the art of mind mapping.

Uses For MindMapping
Here are some of the things that MindMaps can be used for taken from Wikipedia-

  • Problem Solving
  • Outline / Framework Design
  • Anonymous collaboration.
  • Marriage of words and visuals.
  • Individual expression of creativity.
  • Condensing material into a concise and memorable format.
  • Team building or synergy creating activity.
  • Enhancing work morale.

Mind Mapping Software
There is lots of software on the market for mind mapping you can check them out here.
Now the mindmapping software that I use are have been exposed to are Mindjet MindManager and Mindmeister.com. I find both of them to be very good and simple to use. Mindmeister.com of course allows you to view and use your maps at any time anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.

If you never tried it I urge you to give it a try. It might be surprised at the clarity added creativity might add into your life.

Wishing a productive and creative week!
