The Fight For Your Ignorance Or Enlightenment

Photography By CG 2.0

Let me ask you a question, are you fighting for your ignorance or enlightenment?

I know, I know you are all screaming YES! YES! YES!  In reality though we are fighting for both on some level. In my day to day as a social media marketer and general technology enthusiast I often find myself on the receiving end of the blows shared out by many of you fighting for your ignorance. Ouch, don't get violent with me here. Just hear me out. Give me the chance to take you our of your ignorance this time.

Our fight for enlightenment is pretty obvious – many of us seek knowledge and we know exactly what it feels like. The fact that you are reading this blog means your are seeking enlightenment. Its the fight for ignorance that we can get very ignorant about and never even realize it.

Let me be quick to admit that I have put up some valient fights for my ignorance, I am thankful today that I have lost some of them especially in the social media arena. One such example was when I was working on my system for updating my many social networks. I created a great system for updating my beloved networks using tarpipe.com and just as I was finishing the special beta offer for the latest & greatest tool in the social sphere ping.fm. It was threatened my newly constructed update system and I immediately felt the need to protect my system and my ignorance. To make a long story short, I actually got into Ping.fm and really, really loved it. It's actually still one of the things I rely on, to update my social networks.

Having that experience has taught me a valuable lesson. We live in a world today where we are going to be consistently bombarded with new stuff. Your fight for ignorance or enlightenment is going to be continuous, and ever fuzzy. You will need to have a good strategy or system to determine which fight is necessary at the appropriate time.

I am sure most of you can relate to watching someone who violently resisted getting a cell phone now being a big fan of the technology.

The world is getting smarter with each passing day. Are you

Are you fighting for the good ole time days and protecting outdated and broken systems?

Are you fighting to have resources dedicated to developing new systems and ideas? Are you ready to fail with new knowledge?

I charge you that as you go through this week, to develop a strategy to fight for your ignorance or enlightenment.

One of the big misconceptions of my exploits as a blogger is that my interest is self-serving. I understand that the URL is my name and yes, "the dude actually has a logo" lol, talking about this always makes me smile. It does because if you spend any time around me you would know that I am very pro-Caribbean in my outlook and I am always willing to share my knowledge to help out a situation.

Now for me, CoreyKGraham.Me is my "portal to the world". I see it as a domain where I can share my thoughts, ideas and experiences with the world. It is my hope that these posts will move the world forward, however small. My greatest pleasure actually comes when one of my blog posts helps people who I would not normally touch make more informed decisions, whether it is with their marketing strategy or their next smartphone purchase. My drive is to help others and to do my part to enhance this world.

Having said all of that I want to invite you to become a member of my site and subscribe to my newsletter so that I can continue to share with you. To be quite honest my decision to do this membership / subscribe to my newsletter drive is to set up the platform to offer freebies and discounts to you as the opportunity arises. I'll so no more you decide if its of value to you.

SciTech Expo Barbados 2010 Gets Going This Week

Science took over much of my younger years. When my peers were caught up reading novels, I was into the science books exploring and reading about great inventors especially the "light bulb man" Thomas Edison. He is one inventor I really respect. I also was into creating things. I always had some new project I was working on putting together or experimenting with when I should have been doing homework or studying to get an A instead of a B.

There were some good times, I remember borrowing my mother's face mirror to make a solar cooker and staying up till 4:30 am writing code for my computer game among many, many other  things. Not all of my experiments went right of course … like the time I got a new science kit. I was all excited intoxicated but all the new ideas and possibilities filling my head. Immediately I started to experiment. I remember the last thing I tried on that first day of receiving the kit was removing my night light from the socket and putting wires into the wall socket…. Before I continue let me just make it clear that my night light was only used because of security concerns from my parents.

Now, about that final experiment of Day 1 of receiving the science kit. Actually I made an equation which captures what I learnt brilliantly. It taught me -

wires + wall socket + small fire + burned wall socket = unhappy parents + l,

where l  = licks to impart a lesson imparted by my loving parents – don't get caught experimenting

My experimenting today, is most publicly apparent on this blog. Those of you who are longstanding readers of my blog would know that it is a constant evolution, there is always something new. I would say though, that in the Caribbean we don't always get to be on the creative side of technology as most of our technology is imported and maintained. Personally, I believe in creativity and innovation and I believe that we have alot of potential in this area. As a result, I am happy to be involved with the online promotion of the SciTech Expo In Barbados through Drenalin Productions.

Today, I want to remove the official hat and talk to you outside of professional allegiances, because too often we limit creativity to music, dance and visual arts. If you believe that creativity and a spirit of innovation should exist in our Caribbean Community, make some time to become involved in the SciTech Expo if even as a guest interacting with primary, secondary and tertiary students, professionals and other like minded persons.

You can

  • put it in your status
  • tweet about it
  • mention it to interested persons

See you later this week! Come and see exhibits in the area of agriculture, computer science, engineering, environment, medicine, health and technology

What Time Is Morning Online? Happy Rush Hour To You!

What time is morning online???

Is it in UK time? Eastern Caribbean Time? Jamaican Time?

We go through our days not really questioning just what exactly it is we do all day. All my life I have been a late riser. If you see me at 5 am on any given day your best bet is that I have not slept a wink all night. If this post sounds a little biased now you know why.

Now in many industries getting work done is far more dependant on your team than it is on other factors. The time of day and where you do your work is far less important than 20 years ago. We have several tools now that help us to facilitate us working around the clock. We no longer have to wait for the team meeting to get everyone in the same room to get work done. Simple example in times gone by we needed to be in a room with our colleagues to put a document together. Today though Google docs can facilitate this collaboration along a perpetual team meeting where people can make changes and add their comments at their convenience.

Here is a list of tools of some of the tools that is enabling this phenomenon to happen.

  • email
  • Online collaboration tools (such as Google Docs)
  • Online project management systems (such as  Basecamp)
  • online banking
  • and more in your arsenal.

….Yeah I know I can hear you saying it.

Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy and wealthy and wise.

I would shoot back .. What time is early? I would agree its very important to be early when you are working on your projects. But what time of the day is "early". Being proactive and pushing your work ahead is always good.

One major thing though, so many of us just love Rush Hour feeling. The thrill and excitement of rushing out the door. We are addicted to it.

I guess we do what makes sense.

Chimamanda Adichie: The Danger Of A Single Story

I thoroughly enjoyed this TED talk, by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Adichie. In this talk she tells the story of how she found her voice. Chimamanda uses the story to describe the power of the media to influence our thinking and its ability to limit or perspectives to a 'single story'. She explains how the stereotypical idea of Africa, in the minds of her roommate and college professor impacted her when she went to the USA to study. She relates their shock when she told them about her story of Africa and her country Nigeria exposing them to  "another story" of what Africa is like.

I urge you to watch this video first and then just read the rest of the blog after, it will make lots more sense to you.

I believe we should be thankful that we are in an age now where it is possible to easily access multiple stories of a single place or people. The Web 2.0 world now allows us to connect with each other around the globe and get an insight into the worlds of others.

Services like Skype now allow us the luxury of having extended conversations with people from around the world to hear what their reality is like first hand. Communication worldwide is now alot more accessible to us all, creating options for us so we are not forced to digest a singular story or perspective feed to us by the main stream media.

The Single Story And Business

I believe this idea extends also into business world. We now have more options to better listen to and engage our customers share stories. We have all this social media and several ways of publishing stories of the business and of our customers. We can also support the discussion on our website and have public conversations the customer on our products and services and even provide customer service in a public form. We can sell them more than one story of us.
Some customers only ever hear about one tremendously bad experience one customer had. And as we know that customer will continuously sell them that singular story and we have little change of being able to deal with that issue, until now.

Are you betting your life on a single story? Or are you going to make an effort to ensure your have multiple stories told of your business and listen to multiple stories of your customers?

Avoid the danger of the single story!

Explore And Make Light Work Of Your Day

We are bombarded these days by several web apps claiming to "help" us do this and that easier and faster. Its hard to keep up with all the new stuff that is out there and still get your work done. I know how it is new services seems to be developed as fast as we receive emails. Talking about emails that is not getting any easier. We have more emails finding their way into our inboxes. And now you have more inboxes to manage with facebook and all the jazz.

Its almost like a natual instinct to militantly protect your sanity and stress levels. You refrain from rushing and trying every new thing people suggest to you. At times I know you can get pretty aggressive about and it can get pretty ugly pretty quickly.

"I said it don't what it. Why are you still trying to get me to sign up. I have to finish my work. I will talk to you later"

I want to urge you today to set some time aside and explore the world. Shop around. Test drive some of these new web apps. Expose yourself to what is out there. You don't really want to be working hard. Well not when you can be working smarter and getting more done.

At the end of the day technology here to make your lifes easier. We eat with forks, knifes, spoons etc. All technology that make eating easier for us. There are people out there experiencing the same problems you are and they are helping develop technologies that will know those problems go away or easier to bare.

Open you mind and dedicate a little time in your busy schedule to find out what is out there.

I would really hate to think that you and your team might be agonizing about a particular task that can so much easy with simple tools like google documents and other collaborative tools.

Just how much of your precious time are you wasting?
