“Building on Broadband – Practical Applications, Challenges and Opportunities”

A Small Business Panel Discussion

Wednesday April 17th, 2013
8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
The Oval, Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre

Part of the launch of Columbus in Barbados, this session will stimulate discussion and explore opportunities for collective advancement of the small business sector.

SUMMARY:
There are approximately 11,000 small businesses operating in the formal sector in Barbados, accounting for approximately 25% of the employed labour force and 40% of GDP.

While Barbados broadband adoption in business is more advanced than any other Caribbean territory, there exists several major barriers to end-to-end execution including: logistics challenges, cumbersome electronic payment systems and lack of content.

In this session, we will explore and give practical examples of how broadband technology stimulates growth in the sector, can save costs and generate greater efficiencies in small businesses. We will also debate what is required to fully exploit the potential of this technology.

What is in for me?

I have been fielding questions from various persons who want to understand the NCF's e-Create Cultural Industries Symposium 2013 is all about. They are especially curious about the theme "Finding your marketplace at the intersection of culture and technology". I have decided to make use of technology and share my answer via a blog post so that everyone could benefit from it.

Background On The Symposium

The Symposium aims to generate business for Bajan visual artistes and musicians in Brazil. Key persons in the visual arts and music industries in Brazil have been identified and will flown into Barbados this week to attend the symposium where they will see what Barbados has to offer… so if you are an artiste or musician you know you have got to be noticed!

Now the NCF also recognizes that technology is integral in developing and maintaining this Barbados-Brazil connection and as a result they are including the Barbados Tech community (soon to be industry) into the Symposium. It is my responsibility to conceptualize and pull this part of the Symposium together. It has been a blast so far, technology enables and facilitates business so we built the Tech N Bim Cafe to facilitate business at the Symposium. In short we have built the marketplace!

Tech N Bim Cafe – The Marketplace

The Tech N Bim Cafe is where real business gets done and where the magic happens! This cafe is is an intimate setting where you can :-

  • Conduct meetings and do business – (sales are good for business)
  • Understand how to go about creating an app for your business.
  • Find out and test the local apps that are currently available.
  • Meet tech persons who can help you make more use of your phone or tablet in your business
  • Catch up on your work or with clients between sessions.
